Greenhouse Project

In the spring of 2013, ICS was awarded funding through the Lilly Endowment for the construction of 7 "sister" greenhouses to be located in the Wabash Valley and facilitate intergenerational learning about science, nutrition, and local food systems.

The seven greenhouses are at the following locations (mapped above):

  • Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College's White Violet Center for Eco-Justice
  • Ivy Tech Community College's Giving Garden
  • Indiana State University's Institute for Community Sustainability
  • Indiana State University's Early Childhood Education Center
  • Catholic Charities' 14th and Chestnut Community Center
  • Rose Hulman Institute of Technology
  • Lost Creek Township

The designs for the greenhouses are based on University of Missouri Bradford Research and Extension Center specifications, although each site altered construction plans slightly to fit individual needs. By keeping the design relatively consistent across locations, we standardize greenhouse conditions and can draw more significant research conclusions. When all of the greenhouses are operational, Carbon dioxide, temperature, lumens, and humidity inside and outside of these structures will be remotely monitored.
